The name Blackjack emerged because of a variant where black jack cards (Jack of Spades and Jack of Clubs) were played with special odds. This is usually no longer the case in modern Blackjack games, but the name stuck.
Blackjack’s global success is in part almost certainly the result of colonisation. When French colonists entered America, they brought much of their culture with them, including Blackjack. Then, when gambling was more widely legalised in the US in the 1930s, Blackjack was soon a mainstay in Vegas casinos.
Blackjack Rules
So, the aim of the game is to score as close to 21 as possible without going over it. How do we do that? Let’s start with card values. Aces are worth 1 or 11, face cards are worth 10 and everything else is taken at peg value.
The game begins with the dealer dealing two cards face down to each player. Then they deal themselves two cards, one face up and one face down. Then bets are placed on the likelihood of beating the dealer’s hand.
Next, each player takes it in turns to decide what they want to do: Hit (get another card), Stick (stay with your existing two cards and play that hand) and Bust, when your hand goes over 21. Special odds often apply to hands of five cards that are still under 21.
